Teluk Intan, Air Kuning
LOCATION DESCRIPTION
This place is more than 500 hectare wide and is surrounded by lakes from 30 ft to 60 ft depth water, in 1857; this is where The Royal Malaysian Family did tin business which brought up Malaysian economy during that era. Another fact contributing to the mega rich waters is that the two main rivers of Perak are connected at this point to ease transport of the tins to be processed. Thus, in 1990 the Government acknowledge this as a tourist land and build watch towers to observe migrating birds from the south.
To get to this place takes approximately 5 hours from Kuala Lumpur, Do remind u that the journey is inclusive of off road of 1 hour. However, there are still rocky roads remaining due to no maintenance.
Because this place is so wide, the wildlife and fishes here is what I call a nature heaven. From fishing to sight seeing and birds watching, this is truly an unforgettable trip to one of the most historic place in Malaysia.
The species of fish one expects to get here is Toman “Channa marulius” (The Malaysian Giant Snakehead) the size can vary from 1 – 2 kg to 18- 20 kg, you do not have to bring your own bait to get a hook up. Their diet is the smaller fishes which u can find in groups feeding on bread. Fish for your own bait using smaller rods. And this can keep you going all day and night as it can be quite entertaining. So, imagine yourself waiting for the big whopper, while sitting down there on a lazy chair, catching small fishes and enjoying a cup of coffee under the starlight and cool weather.
TIPS: Use med-heavy action rods, 7-8 ft blank rod, 30 – 40lbs braided line, for my personal recommendation, use Power Pro, moss green line. And for the line use 20 – 30 lbs steel wire leader. With a 1/0 stainless steel hook.
Bite rates here is subjective to weather, on a hot 12 noon sun, Toman tends to feed more than a rainy day or in the night.

Here’s a rather interesting story on how this waters is infected with this giant species of freshwater fish. During the tin mining era, the Chinese operators releases the Toman fish to prevent Tin theft. Toman was once feared by the locals of its predatory behaviors. But today, it’s the most enduring fish to get hooked in Malaysian Sports Fishing Association.
By night falls, do expect an all different type of fishing activity. The type of fish that feeds at night is Feather back, locals calls it Belida “Chitala lopis” feeds on smaller fishes, prawns, crickets. Besides “baung” or the Asian Red Tail Catfish “Hemibagrus nemurus” is also common among hook ups, do beware of its sharp fins on the side of its gills, it can deliver an agonizing pain. If you’re lucky, u might get the Tapah, it’s the Malaysian Catfish, the recorded weight landed is 27kgs and the one caught in one of the fisherman’s net for prawns is 65 kgs.
This species feed on live fishes at night. Get a good distance on your casting and wait for it.
While waiting for all these action, fresh water prawns can be found throughout the lake and river. And its very good to eat.

Do prepare yourself for extreme conditions, when it rains, it rains hard! So gear up with raincoat and a few more t-shirts to change. The lake’s water supply is clean to take a shower. Do watch out for leeches though. The leeches are a XL size. And I mean XL! Check out the pictures below and you’ll know what I’m talking about. It can get quite cold at night so bring along wind breakers and tracks, socks and sneakers/shoes are fine but NO barefoot/slippers as it’s a wild place and snakes are often spotted. Never go into the water without notifying the organizers as we’ve spotted Croc shoes owners, Mr Croc.
In the morning peacock bass can be seen chasing smaller fishes on the surface of the water. Do ask the person who brings you there on how to get them as they’re quite fussy and shy. The sizes vary from 500 GM to 3 KGS. And its not uncommon to get multiple hook ups as this species feed in groups of a few hundred if not thousands. The beautiful thing is that it is not shy of lures. Please release them properly after pictures.

I recommend all sports fisherman to release back the fish and eat what you can. This is to conserve a wonderful place like this, like no other. Personally I would give this place a
9 out of 10 if not full marks.
